What Are House Flies?

House flies are among the most recognizable flying insects in and around homes. In Kansas and much of the Midwest, they are one of the most frequently encountered pests, especially during warmer months. These gray-colored flies measure about ¼ to 5/16 of an inch long and are known for the four dark stripes running down their thorax.

Though their presence is usually just annoying, house flies are also drawn to places where decaying matter exists, making it especially important to understand their habits and reduce their attraction to living spaces. At Green Pest Solutions, we’re here to help you manage fly activity effectively and keep your home feeling fresh and protected.

Understanding the Fly Life Cycle

Flies multiply quickly, especially when temperatures are warm and food sources are abundant. Their life cycle includes four stages: egg, larva (maggot), pupa, and adult.

  • Eggs are laid in moist, organic materials like garbage, pet waste, compost, or manure.
  • These eggs can hatch in as little as 24 hours.
  • Maggots—small, creamy-white larvae feed directly on the decaying material and grow rapidly over 3 to 24 days.
  • After feeding, they form a protective reddish-brown puparium before transforming into adult flies.

Once mature, adult flies may live for a few weeks, feeding on similar material as maggots. Their sponge-like mouthparts are designed to absorb liquids, and they use repeated salivation, ingestion, and regurgitation to pre-digest what they consume.

Where Flies Are Found

House flies are often seen hovering or landing on:

  • Trash cans and recycling bins
  • Compost piles and animal waste
  • Pet food dishes
  • Kitchen counters, sinks, and uncovered food
  • Outdoor patios, grills, or picnic areas

They’re also capable of flying a mile or more from where they hatched, but they usually stay close to familiar feeding and breeding grounds.

Are House Flies Harmful?

House flies don’t bite, but they can still be unwelcome visitors. As they move from trash or waste to food and kitchen surfaces, they may carry bacteria or germs on their bodies or in the residue left behind from regurgitation. While they’re not directly dangerous in small numbers, reducing fly activity helps keep your living space cleaner and more comfortable.

At Green Pest Solutions, we approach fly control with prevention, sanitation, and strategic treatments, creating a solution that supports both cleanliness and peace of mind.

Where do house flies come from?

House flies typically come from areas with decaying organic matter, such as garbage bins, compost piles, animal waste, or spoiled food. They lay their eggs in these materials, and when the eggs hatch, the larvae (maggots) feed and grow until they develop into adult flies. Once mature, flies often enter homes through open doors, windows, or vents, especially during warmer months when they're most active. Keeping things clean and sealed is key to preventing them from coming inside.
