Commonly Found In: Basements, crawl spaces, garages, sheds, and shaded outdoor areas
Camel crickets, sometimes called cave crickets, aren’t true crickets at all. They’re more closely related to katydids and grasshoppers, and are known for their unique hump-backed appearance, which gives them their common name. These crickets are typically light tan to brown with long antennae and powerful hind legs for jumping.
Unlike house crickets, camel crickets don’t have wings and don’t chirp, which makes them much quieter houseguests, but their sudden leaps can still take homeowners by surprise. Thankfully, they’re harmless and easy to manage with a little help and the right know-how.
Camel crickets prefer cool, dark, and damp environments, where they can hide during the day and come out at night. They’re often found:
They aren’t attracted to light like other insects, and they don’t typically try to reproduce indoors. However, they may accidentally wander into homes in search of shelter, especially during hot or dry weather.
Some species may feed on plant material or other insects, but most simply stay hidden and out of sight.
Camel crickets are not dangerous, and they don’t bite, sting, or carry diseases. The long spike-like structure seen on females is an ovipositor (used to lay eggs), and it is completely harmless.
While their appearance might be startling, especially when they leap unexpectedly, they are simply trying to find a safe, quiet place to hide. They don’t cause structural damage, don’t chew on fabrics or wood, and don’t infest food supplies.
In very large outdoor populations, some burrowing activity can create slightly uneven areas in the lawn, but this is uncommon.
Crickets are omnivores, meaning they eat a variety of plant and animal matter. In the wild, they feed on things like decaying plants, fungi, fruits, seeds, and small insects. Indoors, they may nibble on fabrics, paper, or food crumbs if they find their way inside. While their diet is diverse, crickets are not typically destructive and usually forage at night in search of food.
Crickets chirp to communicate, and most of the chirping you hear comes from male crickets. They produce the sound by rubbing their wings together in a process called stridulation. Chirping serves several purposes, mainly to attract female crickets, ward off other males, or signal distress. The frequency and pattern of the chirps can even vary based on temperature or time of day.
