Commonly Found In: Yards, standing water, ponds, gutters, planters, birdbaths, and shaded outdoor areas

What Are Mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes are small, slender flying insects known for their itchy bites and buzzing presence during warmer months. In Kansas, there are around 50 different mosquito species, but most look similar and behave in comparable ways. They range in color from gray to brown or black, often with fine scales on their bodies and one pair of wings.

Only female mosquitoes bite, using a long, needle-like mouthpart called a proboscis to feed on blood. Males, by contrast, feed solely on nectar and plant juices and have larger, bushier antennae. While a mosquito’s bite may be annoying, with the right precautions and help, mosquito activity can be dramatically reduced around your home.

Understanding the Mosquito Life Cycle

Mosquitoes develop through four life stages: egg, larva (also called “wiggler”), pupa, and adult.

  • Female mosquitoes lay 100–300 eggs in their lifetime, often on or near standing water like puddles, containers, or birdbaths.
  • Eggs hatch into larvae that feed on tiny organic material and float near the water’s surface.
  • Larvae eventually become pupae, which are mobile but do not feed.
  • Adults emerge at the surface of the water and begin flying shortly after.

Under warm conditions, the mosquito life cycle can be completed in just one week, making it easy for populations to increase quickly when standing water is left untouched.

Where Mosquitoes Are Found

Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, especially in:

  • Puddles, birdbaths, gutters, and planters
  • Overwatered lawns or gardens
  • Tarps, buckets, pet bowls, or anything that holds water
  • Low-lying shaded areas, especially with moisture

Even small containers with a little rainwater can become mosquito breeding grounds. That’s why mosquito management starts with removing the places they love to lay eggs.

Are Mosquitoes Dangerous?

While mosquito bites are primarily a nuisance, they can occasionally carry diseases. In Kansas and Missouri, the West Nile Virus (WNV) is the most common mosquito-borne illness, carried mostly by Culex mosquitoes. Most people infected with WNV show no symptoms, though mild cases can resemble the flu.

Other viruses, such as Zika, are linked to Aedes mosquitoes, which prefer living near human dwellings and laying eggs in containers. While no Zika transmission has been reported in Kansas, the species capable of carrying the virus have been found in the region.

At Green Pest Solutions, we believe in proactive, preventive protection, giving you and your family the ability to enjoy your outdoor spaces with confidence.

How long do mosquitoes live?

The lifespan of a mosquito depends on its species, environment, and sex. Male mosquitoes typically live only about 1 to 2 weeks, since they do not feed on blood and focus solely on mating. Female mosquitoes live longer, generally 2 to 4 weeks, and may survive even longer under ideal conditions. After mating, a female can lay several batches of eggs throughout her life, each time after taking a blood meal. While their lifespan may seem short, mosquitoes reproduce quickly and can multiply rapidly if standing water is present for breeding.

Do Male Mosquitoes Bite?

No, male mosquitoes do not bite. Only female mosquitoes feed on blood, which they need in order to produce eggs. Male mosquitoes lack the specialized mouthparts (proboscis) required to pierce skin. Instead, they feed exclusively on nectar and plant juices. Their primary role is to mate with females, and they typically live shorter lives than their female counterparts. So if you're getting bitten, it's definitely the females doing the biting.
