Right now, somewhere in Kansas, a colony of termites is eating someone’s home from the inside out, and that homeowner has no idea.
That’s what makes termites so dangerous. They don’t announce themselves the way ants march across your kitchen counter, or mice scratch behind your walls. Termites work silently, hidden inside wood, underground, and behind drywall, sometimes for years before anyone notices. By the time the damage becomes visible, the repair bill can be staggering.
And summer? It’s when they’re at their most active.
If you own a home in the Topeka, Lawrence, or Kansas City area, here’s what you need to know about termites this season, and how to catch them before they catch you off guard.
Why Summer Is Peak Termite Season in Kansas
Kansas summers bring exactly what subterranean termites love: heat, humidity, and warm, moist soil. These conditions supercharge colony growth, sending worker termites foraging farther and faster through underground tunnel networks in search of wood, including the wood your home is built on.
Termite swarming season in the Midwest typically starts in spring, but it can extend well into early summer, especially after a warm rain. Those swarmers, the winged reproductive termites you might see near windows or light fixtures, are a sign that a mature colony is nearby and actively expanding. Once they land, shed their wings, and pair off, they’re looking for a place to start a brand-new colony. Your home’s foundation, porch, or deck framing can look like a welcome mat.
The heat also accelerates how fast an established colony causes damage. A mature subterranean termite colony can contain hundreds of thousands of individuals, all feeding on cellulose (the structural material in wood) around the clock. In the warm months, they simply eat more.
The Warning Signs Homeowners Almost Always Miss

The tricky part about termites is that they don’t leave obvious clues. They feed on wood from the inside out, which means a beam or floor joist can look perfectly fine on the surface while it’s being hollowed out behind the scenes. That said, there are signs, if you know where to look.
- Mud tubes along your foundation. These pencil-width tunnels made of soil and saliva are highways termites build to travel between their underground colony and the wood in your home. You’ll most often spot them on exterior foundation walls, in crawl spaces, or along basement walls. If you see one, there’s an active colony nearby.
- Discarded wings near windows and doors. After swarming, termites shed their wings. Finding small piles of translucent wings on windowsills, near exterior doors, or around light fixtures is one of the most common (and most overlooked) signs of termite activity. Many homeowners mistake them for gnats or dismiss them entirely.
- Hollow-sounding wood. Knock on a baseboard, door frame, or wooden beam that you suspect might be affected. If it sounds hollow or papery instead of solid, termites may have been feeding inside it. By the time wood sounds hollow to the tap, significant damage has usually already occurred.
- Bubbling or peeling paint. When termites tunnel close to the surface of a wall, they introduce moisture that causes paint to bubble, peel, or appear water-damaged, even when there’s no plumbing leak. If you notice unexplained paint damage, especially near the base of walls, it’s worth a closer look.
- Tight-fitting doors and windows. As termites consume wood around door and window frames, the frames can warp slightly, making doors and windows suddenly harder to open or close. Homeowners often chalk this up to humidity or settling, but it can be a red flag.
Why Termite Damage Is So Costly
Termite damage adds up to more than $5 billion in property damage across the United States every year. The average homeowner who discovers an infestation spends around $3,000 on repairs, but severe cases involving structural beams, floor joists, or load-bearing walls can climb well into the tens of thousands.
What makes termite damage especially painful is that most standard homeowners’ insurance policies don’t cover it. Insurance companies generally consider termite damage preventable through regular inspections and maintenance, so the full cost of treatment and repairs falls on the homeowner.
The real kicker is time. A colony can feed on your home for months or even years before you notice anything is wrong. The longer an infestation goes undetected, the more expensive it becomes. That’s why catching termites early, ideally before they cause any damage at all, is the most cost-effective approach by far.
How to Protect Your Home This Summer
The single most effective thing you can do is schedule a professional termite inspection. A trained technician knows exactly where to look and what to look for, including signs that aren’t visible to the untrained eye. At Green Pest Solutions, our inspections are thorough, covering your home’s interior, exterior, foundation, crawl space, and any high-risk areas where wood contacts soil.
Beyond a professional inspection, here are a few things you can do on your own to reduce your risk:
- Eliminate wood-to-soil contact around your home. Mulch, firewood stacks, and wooden landscaping borders placed directly against your foundation create an easy entry point for termites. Keep firewood at least 20 feet from your home, and consider replacing wood mulch near the foundation with gravel or rubber alternatives.
- Address moisture problems. Termites need moisture to survive. Fix leaky faucets, repair poor drainage around your foundation, and make sure your gutters are directing water away from the house, not pooling near the base.
- Keep an eye on vulnerable areas. Periodically check your crawl space, basement, and the exterior of your foundation for mud tubes, discarded wings, or damaged wood. Early detection makes all the difference.
- Stay on a year-round protection plan. One-time treatments help, but termites are persistent. A year-round plan like our Thrive Pest program creates ongoing protection so you’re covered through every season, not just summer.
Don’t Wait for the Damage to Find You
Termites aren’t a pest you can afford to ignore. They won’t go away on their own, and the longer they go undetected, the more it costs to fix. The good news is that catching them early, or better yet, preventing them from ever getting established, is straightforward with the right partner.
At Green Pest Solutions, we work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that fits your home and your needs. And our Pest-Free, Worry-Free Guarantee means we’ll come back, even outside of your normally scheduled visits, at no cost to you until the problem is resolved.
Summer is here. Termites are active. Let’s make sure your home isn’t on their menu.
